I have told by eye specialist my vision problems could be from WNV. I am now receiving treatment. Is there anymore ways for this WNV to affect a person? The list keeps gettting bigger! No wonder depression is suffered by people with it. My doctor says my eye problem is one they see with people with diabetes, something I don't have. Gord

I went last fall when my headaches first started and WNV had not shown up yet. I had perfect vision. I am sure ther will be a big change.jb

Through testing it is due to 2 reasons- Actual damage in the eye and I also have brain damage. None of the damage has caused me to loose my sight (although I had several temporary bouts of blindness in half of one of my eyes, and would be a different eye sometimes or both at the same time). Regarding balance and vision, the virus damaged deep in the center of my brain and my brain stem. I have "spells" where my field of vision is like looking through a kalideoscope. All the images are broken and scattered. I was told that my ears and eyes are fine regarding balance system, but my brains ability to use my eyes and ears for balance is severly damaged. Lots of PT for me. All from West Nile. Outside that, the main body systems I suffer with daily/weekly (and I am 2 years into this) are neurological, digestive, and musculoskeletal (which these systems are controlled by our nervous system). Jclauson I am also 2 years and having similar system problems, still. I also have been light sensative since 1 year into WNV. I wear my sunglasses alot and that bothers some people. I also like the dark which also bothers some people. Sometimes I see floaties. I goto the eye doc this week after not being there before WNV. I don't have diabetes. I noticed a vision problem in my right eye. Lines on a page that were straight, a little distorted with my right eye. I also suffer from light sensitivity. Posts: 73 (07/06/09 17:20:56) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Hi everyone, I have not posted on the site for a long time, but recently have had new problems and wonder if anyone else has had the same. I have trouble with my mouth. It feels like it is scalded and feels like someone took sandpaper to my tongue and roof of my mouth. I went to the dentist who sent me to an oral surgeon who sent me to UCSF to the dental clinic. Two dentists examined me and said I have "burning mouth syndrome" and that it could last weeks or years. They said it was neuropathy and that women over 50 sometimes get it. I also am having a lot more tingling in my face and around my eyes and some blurry vision. It's stressful that it's gotten worse because it was better for so long. I'm sorry to hear that so many are having vision problems. I have not been seen by an ophthalmologist but my optometrist keeps telling me everything looks good and that I have dry eves. I sometimes wonder what is next and anxiety still is a problem when symptoms come. Any words of wisdom? Elaine

All I can say is find what works for you. It has taken me 2 years to find a great biofeedback counsler to help me, a great PT person to help, and 2 drs that are not proactive but if I need something they will get it for me. They don't think I'm crazy. When I did got to my eye dr she was very understanding and told me I should have come in sooner. I would say find an eye dr that can really help you. I even started asking the dr up front if they will be a waist of my time. It is a bit nerve racking but I have wasted enough time with drs thinking they may help. I found it works best to be up front, tell them the deal and ask them if they believe me and will help me. You will know based on their answer if you should move on. A friend of mine is 11/2yrs ahead of me and she has the same problem of things cropping up. We both have anxiety associated with it. I have learn relaxation breathing techniquies to calm me down. What kind of treatment should I seek? My doctor is first doing a test to make sure it is not diabetes. I am sure it is not. jb

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the eyes are controlled by the back lower part of the brain. So if there was any swelling there at all, those would naturally affect the eyes. So, I'm kind of confused about him telling you that. I heard of one case where a person went blind - either temporarily or permanently from WN. I believe that person was on this site. Memory problems kicking in again. So, I think any swelling there would obviously affect the sight. Like I have said before, and as jenniferholmes suggested above, doctors don't know everything about WN and sometimes it takes a long time to get one that doesn't think its "in your head" or need to go to some shrink to because you just have depression. I know that since I got WN, my eyes have been getting worse and worse. You talk about light sensitivity - I have the same thing going on, too. Sometimes, my eyes will just hurt and ache; its the same feeling your eyes suffer during a splitting headache, only I don't have to have a headache to have my eyes ache and hurt when I turn them in their sockets. I wish I could suggest a treatment or something to help. Fortunately for me, I can just get some glasses. Some aren't so lucky and they are in my prayers.

She kept saying how WNV/ENCEP shouldn't be affecting my vision problem because of the positon of the optic nerve. The tests today showed that my vison hadn't changed much in a year...still excellent. I asked her why I had blurred vison an she said probably eye strain from reading. I told her I don't read because of blurred vision. She couldn't answer that because she only knows one way to treat eye problems..so she changed the subject. It got worse..she kept saying things like..when you had WNV. I had to remind her several times that I still have it... and after a view more stupid comments I snapped at her. At least I did find out there is no nerve damage. I am going to try stronger reading glasses. That's my beef for today..thanks for listening. jb

My eye doc also checked my optic nerves and said they weren't damaged. He acknowledged that I had vision problems from the virus and he said that most likely it was because of the part of the brain where vision is processed, not the optic nerve...I looked it up and the part of the brain that processes vision is in the area where encephalitis/menengitis swells and squeezes the brain.
