West Nile and Wii |

Yesterday was the 1st time I played with the Wii game, between bowling, pool and baseball today I'm pretty sore from the games. I never thought it was
that physical of a game system, like X-Box or PlayStation are mostly hand held controls, this was different. I guess it could be used as a work out tool it
has a assessment tool to measure your progress, normally I don't suggest any treatment or meds, this I would say to try out.

I got a wii last Christmas and my husband and i played nearly every night b/c it was the only way i could participate in anything even remotely close to
athletics (and being a former athlete; that was important to me). There was in an article in my newspaper how vets coming home with missing limbs and brain
injuries played wii to help recover lost skills and boost morale and they called it "wii-habilitation" My husband and i called my wii team in the
evening "wii-hab" time for me too! I loved the fun and the competition i was able to experience even in those early dark times for me; the wii was my
evening ritual of fun and exercise.

Well after becoming Pro-Status Bowler I don't think I could go another round, but I have to be ready to play my family tomorrow as I know there will be
some fierce competition there. A couple weeks ago there was a special on TV about how they are using Wii in rehab, it does make you use muscles that you
normally wouldn't use. I could use the exercise to burn off the Holiday meals that seemed to put a little extra under the tree for me. Well I guess I
should take a few Motrin and call it a night,

I saw a documentary about a month ago where some of the big named hospitals have gotten them for rehab centers for people who have sustained severe injuries as
part of their PT program........and it is working wonders....... in addition to some homes for the elderly are getting them too to keep their tenants minds
sharp.
I say Wii-on!! Or Wii, Wii, Wii all the way home! |

I played Wii at a friends house the other week and I was also sore for the next week. It is definately a workout! I think I'll stick to swimming and hot
tub for now.

I went to see my doctor about a Wii accident yesterday, I told my doc that I hurt my butt and leg from bowling, she laughed and told me that she has tennis
elbow now from the game. Funny how so many of us older folks (meaning more than 30 years old) have had injuries from playing that game, maybe we'll have to
go back to Atari and play pong.

Went to the chiropractor today about the Wii accident, he really didn't want to treat me because of all the things that I have going on from the after
affects of Meningoencephalitis. He figured that he could or would do something that would upset the problems I've had and wouldn't be able to put me
back together. When I first started talking to him he began to give me this spiel about West Nile and how it affects older folks and what kind of damage it can
do,,,,, Really!!!!!!!!! I would of never guessed. I let him tell me what he knew and then schooled him on what does happened and what happened to me, spent a
little time bringing a little more knowledge to the medical community.
He couldn't tell me anything I didn't know, how my body was a little twisted and the muscles in my back and shoulders were a whee bit tight. He twisted me one way and then another, pushed on me and after every bone in my back creaked, he set off my right arm. It took about 15 minutes for it to stop moving, with a surprised look on his face he asked me if I was doing that or if it was doing it on it's own. When I told him that's what it does he figured he might want to go a little slower on me and fix one thing at a time if he can. Oh well at least he's willing to give it a try,,,,,, Jack Raney

My doctor sent me the results of some blood work I had done, it wasn't good news for me, she wrote that I was "too fat". I know I need to go
to the gym to build the muscles I use to have back up, but I have hard time doing something I didn't have to do before so why should I have to do it now?

Yikes Jack!
I too am starting to ease back into a strength training routine and it's gone just as smooth for me. haha. I started trying to do pushups and got a huge pain in my chest about two days into it. It was really really painful for about 10 minutes and then really really sore for another 2 weeks! oops. For situps I haven't had any bad belly pain. But I also use a ball in a lot of my exercises (you know the ones that are like 2 feet in diameter that they sell for like $10). Its really nice because helps you better control and support the kind of situp you do. You can lean your back on the ball and do more of a crunch or you can change your position and do a full situp. It's really really much better for the back too. (I'm kindof a situp junkie; I used to have a six pack before WNV). And it's really good for stretching those muscles afterward. |

Well I guess when a person gets older the bounce back time is a little longer, in my case the elastic was a little more stretch out than if I was 20
something. I started going to physical therapy last week and was given some home stretches to do, so Saturday I began doing them and my calf cramped up so bad
that I had to tear the muscles to stop the cramp. Haven't played Wii since the accident, looks like I'll have to take a break from it.
Next heading should read "Class action law suit against the makers of Wii, older folks suing for not having a warning label on box" Jack Raney
